VOODOO RADIO: “Eat Your Words” Single Review

“Eat Your Words” is a fast-paced, easy-to-love single that races and trips over itself wondering what to do and captures all of the best elements of any other famous punk group.

Initially entitled “Deaf and Dumb Dinner” in 2019, “Eat Your Words” was rereleased in September of 2020 by the British power pop punk band, VOODOO RADIO.

With a sound comparable to band such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Eat Your Words was a quick hook for me. The song spares no time and jumps right into the racing guitars and drums from the start of the song. The song has a lot of repeating lyrics that would normally mean the song gets old, but with the instrumentals that trip over themselves and thrash almost chaotically with the confusion expressed in the lyrics, the repetition of “Dunno what to do, dunno what to do” and “Everybody stop, everybody stop” couldn’t have fit the song better.

There’s so much about this song that the band got right that I don’t even know what needs to be said. The vocals have an echo to them that make them seem far away and detached from the mind, and the screams before the chorus fit perfectly. I usually find songs that repeat verses to be uninteresting, but in this case, it reinforces the idea of confusion and chaos that is first introduced with the first words of the song: “Talking to myself ‘cause I don’t know what to do.”

I’ve been listening to other singles the band has released, and I applaud them for their stuff, each one keeps me interested and I keep wanting more. So if you haven’t heard their single, go give them a listen and tell them I sent you.
